An interesting side effect about the technological boom we had in the last two centuries is that we inevitably become more and more dependent of our technology.
That on itself isn't necessarily bad. We multiply by X the chances of people reaching the age of 70.
But at the same time we multiply by Y the chances of getting cancer before reaching 30.
There is a little perverse side of putting money ahead of everything else: we start to neglect the side effects of certain financial improvements such as feeding cattle with cereals instead of grass.
For some time now, it seems to be sufficiently known by the scientific community that the ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in general western diets is absurdly broken in favor of omega-6. It also seems to be sufficiently known that this may be a major cause of obesity and other health risks, including cancer.
So now that Movember is upon us, I find it important to mention that a good preventive action seems to be to add freshly-grounded flaxseed to your diet. Or, if you're not vegetarian, look for cold water fishes or fish oil.
The idea is to get about 3g of omega-3 and keep the ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 close to 1:1.
Keep in mind that the omega-3 you get from flaxseed is not the same you'd get from fish. It seems that the former needs to be metabolized into the later at a low efficiency rate (less than 10%).
